Dear Colleague and Supporters,
The referendum is now over. The decision has been made. The arguments between the two sides have been finely balanced and difficult to weigh up. It is unsurprising that some of you will feel disappointed at the result but I would plead with you to accept that, on both sides, the arguments made were made with an honest belief that those views were the best for the country.
Having been through those arguments and as a mature democratic party I would urge you to put any lingering doubts over the result behind you. Now is the time for us all to work together closely for the good of the party and the country. Remember that the Conservative Party has been in existence since 1826. We are acknowledged to be the world’s oldest and most successful political party. Deep in the Conservative Party, running through all our history, is a belief in the strength, value and longevity of a distinct British democracy. Our principles are broad, constant and true. Let us not throw all that away. With your help, last year we elected a Conservative MP for Taunton and formed a Conservative Government in Westminster.
We can and must put our differences aside and ensure that we work together making our country a successful, tolerant, enterprising and Conservative led nation.
With my very best wishes to you all.
